
Established by then President Bill Clinton in 1999, 'Gay and Lesbian Pride Month' expanded to inclusively represent all members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, Transgendered, plus community and is most commonly celebrated in memorial of the Stonewall Inn Rebellion of 1969 in which a police raid of the New York City’s Greenwich Village social club turned violent as community members protested police discrimination and brutality.
Noting the cultural and ethnic distinction between African-Americans and Caribbean Americans, then President Barack Obama proclaimed June the 'National Caribbean American Heritage Month' in 2009, in order to recognize the significant contributions of Caribbean-Americans.
